By default for all versions of macOS > 10.10 (released in 2015), homebrew does install binary packages, it does not use source to build. So update note to mention a source build is only an issue for old versions of the OS.
|
|
Make the binary package installer the recommended method, and
note that homebrew installs from source and takes a lot of
disk space.
Closes #4661.

Since Pandoc v2.0 the xz instead of gz format is used for the data archive inside the deb (`data.tar.xz`) and the old commands to extract a gzip archive fail.

* INSTALL.md: update links to Linux distributions. Some links were outdated.
Link to the package search page if no separate page for pandoc exists, and
use HTTPS where possible. All other links have been clicked once and deemed okay.
* INSTALL.md: also link to the download page in the Linux section
for people who only read the parts relevant for them.

* Name change OSX -> macOS
fix commit c96b64e
This commit finishes remaining osx to macOS change, as well as replacing MacOS with macOS.
The reason for the later one is because the "correct" casing of macOS is like that. Apple styles it to looks like iOS, watchOS, tvOS, etc. And unfortunately they all start with a lowercase letter, making propercasing (or even title-casing) odd.
* fix casing of Linux, UNIX, and Windows

I think template haskell is robust enough now across platforms
that this will work.
Motivation: file-embed gives us better dependency tracking: if a data
file changes, ghc/stack/cabal know to recompile the Data module.
This also removes hsb2hs as a build dependency.

Some of the benchmarks were failing due to references to files in the
`tests` directory, which is now called `test`. A search found other
references to it also. This commit updates all these references.

Previously, not all code on the installation page was
highlighted/wrapped in code blocks due to incorrect indentation.
