2011-08-29Save strings we're expanding in case an embedded eval causes themPaul Smith1-13/+7
to be freed (if they're the value of a variable that's reset for example). See Savannah patch #7534
2011-05-07Ensure private variables are not used when appending target-specificPaul Smith1-6/+7
variables. Fixes Savannah bug #32872.

2009-09-24- Rework secondary expansion so we only defer it if there's a possibilityPaul Smith1-2/+2
it might be needed: for most situations we parse prereqs immediately as we used to. Reduces memory usage. - Fixes Savannah bug #18622.

2007-06-19Fix a core dump when reading_file is 0 (20033).Paul Smith1-4/+9
Fix some manual typos (20018).
2007-03-20This is a major update, which switches virtually every allocated-but-not-freedPaul Smith1-3/+5
string into the strcache. As a side-effect, many more structure members and function arguments can/should be declared const. As mentioned in the changelog, unfortunately measurement shows that this change does not yet reduce memory. The problem is with secondary expansion: because of this we store all the prerequisites in the string cache twice. First we store the prerequisite string after initial expansion but before secondary expansion, then we store each individual file after secondary expansion and expand_deps(). I plan to change expand_deps() to be callable in either context (eval or snap_deps) then have non-second-expansion targets call expand_deps() during eval, so that we only need to store that dependency list once.
2006-11-18Fix from Eli for incorrect value of $(MAKE) on Cygwin.Paul Smith1-28/+39
A few changes from char* to void* where appropriate, and removing of unnecessary casts. Much more work on const-ifying the codebase. This round involves some code changes to make it correct. NOTE!! There will almost certainly be problems on the non-POSIX ports that will need to be addressed after the const changes are finished: they will need to be const-ified properly and there may need to be some changes to allocate memory, etc. as well. The next (last?) big push for this, still to come, is const-ifying the filenames in struct file, struct dep, etc. This will allow us to store file names in the string cache and finally resolve Savannah bug #15182 (make uses too much memory), among other advantages.
2006-04-09Another round of cleanups:Paul Smith1-14/+12
- Add more warnings. - Rename variables that mask out-scope vars with the same name. - Remove all casts of return values from xmalloc, xrealloc, and alloca. - Remove casts of the first argument to xrealloc. - Convert all bcopy/bzero/bcmp invocations to use memcp/memmove/memset/memcmp.
2006-04-07Code cleanup: Remove all references to PARAMS() & ansi2knr.Paul Smith1-1/+1
2006-03-15Fix Savannah bug #15913.Paul Smith1-8/+8
2006-03-10Numerous updates to tests for issues found on Cygwin and Windows.Paul Smith1-1/+1
Revert a fix for $? including non-existent files as it shows a bug in the Linux kernel build. Give them a release to fix this. Add some changes from Eli Z. for Windows changes.
2006-02-20- Memory cleanups, found with valgrind.Paul Smith1-8/+8
- Fix handling of special targets like .SUFFIX for VMS insensitive targets. - Don't make temporary batch files for -n. Make sure batch files are created in text mode.
2006-02-15Fix Savannah bug #106: keep separate track of which variable we arePaul Smith1-17/+23
expanding, and use that info when generating error messages instead of the file info, where appropriate.
2006-02-11Last of the copyright updates.Paul Smith1-1/+2
2006-02-11Update copyright and license notices on all files.Paul Smith1-13/+11
Added new file strcache.c to various non-UNIX makefiles and build scripts.
2005-07-12Various minor updates and code cleanups.Paul Smith1-1/+1
2005-02-27Implementation of the second expansion in explicitBoris Kolpackov1-1/+1
rules, static pattern rules and implicit rules.
2004-09-21Fix some bugs in variable pattern substitution (e.g. $(VAR:A=B)),Paul Smith1-41/+39
reported by Markus Mauhart <qwe123@chello.at>. One was a simple typo; to fix the other we call patsubst_expand() for all instances of variable substitution, even when there is no '%'. We used to call subst_expand() with a special flag set in the latter case, but it didn't work properly in all situations. Easier to just use patsubst_expand() since that's what it is.
2004-03-22Numerous updates and bug fixes.Paul Smith1-1/+2
A number of W32 cleanups from J.Grant. A number of OS/2 cleanups from Andreas Buening. Various random bug fixes.
2003-11-04Fix bugs 5798 and 6195.Paul Smith1-0/+10
2003-01-30Enhancement (bug #2407) Make error messages more clear.Paul Smith1-8/+6
2002-10-25Fix eval bugs 1516 and 1517.Paul Smith1-0/+25
2002-10-14Convert the source code to use ANSI C style function definitions andPaul Smith1-31/+12
enable the automake ansi2knr capability. Right now this doesn't quite build using a K&R compiler because of a problem with the loadavg test program, but the rest of the code works. I'm asking the automake list about this problem.
2002-10-05Fix core dump on malformed variable line (Debian bug #81656)Paul Smith1-1/+1
Allow SysV-style variable references to use {} in addition to (). Add variable.h to the POTFILES.in since it has a translatable string.
2002-07-11Install Greg McGary's patches to port the id-utils hashing functions toPaul Smith1-1/+1
GNU make. Also he provides some other performance fixups after doing some profiling of make on large makefiles. Modify the test suite to allow the use of Valgrind to find memory problems.
2002-05-10Fix Debian bug #144306: pass target-specific variables into the environmentPaul Smith1-22/+22
properly. Fix configure: allow cross-compilation; fix getloadavg (still needs _lots_ of work!) Let $(call ...) functions to be self-referencing. Lets us do transitive closures, for example.
2001-01-21Some bug fixes and document updates.Paul Smith1-31/+51
2000-06-19* Various fixes for problems in the 3.79.0.1 pretest.Paul Smith1-1/+5
2000-06-07* Lots of bug fixes and cleanup; new i18n files, etc.Paul Smith1-1/+1
2000-03-27* A large number of fixes/enhancements. See the ChangeLog.Paul Smith1-15/+8
* Added a new version of the German translation file.
2000-02-07* Fix for dir.c from Andreas Schwab.filedef-cleanup-basePaul Smith1-8/+17
* Fix += target-specific variables: if your direct parent doesn't have a setting for the variable but his parent does, you'll get recursive expansion errors.
2000-02-05* Fix PR/1407.Paul Smith1-14/+1
* Keep filename/lineno information for variables, for debugging.
2000-01-11* Change $(call...) to not expand arguments by default.Paul Smith1-1/+1
* Unify the way arguments are passed to builtin functions in function.c.

1999-08-13* Rework jobserver yet one more time.Paul Smith1-1/+4
* Install the $(if ...) function and document it. Still need some examples.

1999-06-14* Various bug fixes.Paul Smith1-1/+1
1999-03-05* Update FSF address info in copyright notices.Paul Smith1-1/+2
* Update maintainers build process; remove GNUmakefile. Require builders to run automake && autoreconf by hand. * Use AC_SUBST_FILE to get the maintMakefile included, rather than GNU make's include directive, which conflicts with automake 1.4's include directive.

reference handling to be simpler. First expand the entire text between the parens if it contains any $s, then examine the result of that for subtitution references and do no further expansion while parsing them.
